PSG Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now secured the season-opening trophy on 14 separate occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic leveler followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the showdown between the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele found the net early on.

However, Marseille struck two times late to seize a surprise lead. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a vital leveler in the dying seconds to send the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, stopping crucial kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and Desire Doue all scored successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a convincing penalty victory.

The record champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the 12th time in the last thirteen seasons.
